Welcome - Win a signed Odyssey Putter

Keegan who? That was the question on most people’s lips last month as young American Keegan Bradley, a 125-1 outsider, defied the world’s best to pick up the final Major title of the season in the shape of the USPGA Championship.

This was the 25-year-old’s first ever start in a Major and by winning has now guaranteed himself entry to many more over the coming years following a victory no one saw coming.

It happens time and again in sport – a complete novice or unknown coming through to take the big prize. It goes to show that anything is possible and that you should never give up on dreams you have of winning – whether it’s on the biggest stage or simply the club championship, monthly medal or even shaving a few shots off your handicap. Keep working hard and it will happen.

In this month’s newsletter we give you the chance to win a limited edition Odyssey putter signed by Thomas Bjorn, and have a superb offer on PowaKaddy electric trolley accessories.

There is also a feature on the latest putters available in the Pro Shop from golf’s leading equipment manufacturers and we share some putting tips and a great practice drill to help improve your game.

Finally, we have another entertaining video from the European Tour’s Every Shot Imaginable studio for you to enjoy.

As always if there is anything you would like to discuss about your game or equipment please do not hesitate to ask in the Pro Shop.

Enjoy the news!

WIN a Signed Thomas Bjorn Odyssey Putter

Odyssey is giving you the chance to win one of its unique Backstryke putters, signed by 2010 Ryder Cup vice-captain and Callaway Staff Professional, Thomas Bjorn.

Bjorn first used the Odyssey Backstryke Marxman putter when winning last year’s Estoril Open de Portugal in which he triumphed by five shots and averaged just 28 putts per round.

“The Backstryke was an immediate hit for me,” said Bjorn. “The design of the head and the shaft really does promote an ideal putting position which I can maintain throughout my stroke.

“I switch between a couple of Odyssey putter styles, but the Backstryke, in particular, helps to promote a beautiful, smooth putting stroke which I can repeat time after time.”

Thanks to its unique design, the Backstryke is perfectly equipped to help all golfers – from Ryder Cup veterans to aspiring amateurs – enjoy a more efficient putting stroke.

The shaft has been moved backwards in the head, placing the axis of the shaft point as close as possible to the putter head’s centre of gravity. This in-line axis develops what Odyssey design experts call ‘Stroke Balance’ – a fluid and stable stroke path promoting better distance control, consistency and accuracy.

The Backstryke also uses a Visible Face Alignment feature that allows golfers to clearly see if the face is square to the target line without the shaft impeding the line of sight. This significantly benefits golfers who struggle with long putts and consistently position their putter away from the intended target line.

The Backstryke series is available in five of Odyssey’s famous putter designs – D.A.R.T, Sabertooth, 2-Ball, Blade and Marxman.

To be in with a chance of winning this great prize simply visit the Odyssey website and then answer the following question:

What is Odyssey’s brand slogan?
a) ‘The Best Putter in the World’
b) ‘#1 Putter in Golf’
c) ‘Golf’s Best Putter’

Email your answer to geoff@geoffkite.co.uk by Friday, September 30, to ensure your name goes in the hat.

Odyssey Backstryke

Feature #1: Forward Press Stabilisation
Advantage: Hands forward position without de-lofting promotes an upward stroke into the ball. The shaft position also helps create a stable, straight line with the leading arm so the wrists are less likely to break down during the stroke.
Benefit: An ascending stroke imparts top-spin faster, generating true roll. The position of the hands also encourages a longer and lower follow-through for better consistency.

Feature #2: Visible Face Alignment
Advantage: Allows the golfer to clearly see if the face is square to the target line without the shaft impeding the line of sight.
Benefit: Provides an unprecedented visual aid in lining up putts to the target line for precision accuracy.

Feature #3: Stroke Balance
Advantage: A putter balanced on the axis of the putting stroke
Benefit: Promotes a fluid, stable stroke path that’s more consistent, accurate and leads to better distance control.

Feature #4: White Ice Insert
Advantage: The inner core is 19.6% firmer to enhance the feel and 92% stiffer for better resiliency.
Benefit: The multi-layer insert has been fine-tuned to enhance sound, responsiveness, resiliency and consistency. The face surface has been roughened to enhance the sound at impact with softer golf balls. The rough texture also helps increase friction between the ball and the insert to promote forward roll.

Feature #5: A.R.T. (Advanced Roll Technology)
Advantage: The multi-material construction results in the lowest and deepest center of gravity of any Odyssey putter line.
Benefit: Better, quicker and truer roll

TaylorMade Ghost

The Ghost Series is comprised of three beautiful, Tour-proven shapes designed to be exceptionally easy to aim the ball down your intended line.

All Ghost putters incorporate Pure Roll insert technology to promote forward spin and smooth roll. They also have a white finish designed to stand out against the lush green grass of the putting surface and adjustable weight technology for swing weighting on custom lengths.

Scotty Cameron California

Scotty Cameron's latest putter line – California – embodies all the unique attributes that make his fine-milled putters instruments of putting art – high-quality, precision-milled stainless steel; refined, masterful design aesthetics; Tour-proven, customisable specifications; smart, interchangeable weighting and classic accessories to match.

The California line includes the milled-from-the-block Coronado pintail, compact Sonoma wide body, elegant Monterey blade, refined Del Mar mid-mallet and the smooth new Hollywood.

Named after some of Scotty's favourite California towns, each high-toe model merges the best of classic, old world putter design with modern, performance-based technology.

Interchangeable sole weights give players the ability to match a putter's headweight to a preferred length, while the misted honey dipped finish, complemented by translucent merlot and French vanilla paintfill, is reminiscent of a golden California evening as the sun dips into the Pacific.

NEW PING Anser

In the Anser Milled Series, PING carries on the tradition of the most successful and complimented putter design in golf by introducing seven new models to fit more stroke types and style preferences. With the Anser Milled line PING introduces its new ‘Fit for Stroke’ concept of putter fitting.

Fully machined using 303 stainless steel, Anser Milled putters feature slight variations to the top lines, heel-toe length and toe radius to suit more style preferences. Subtle milling lines on the heel and toe ballasts prevent glare, and the Ansers’ elegant stained nickel finish is optically appealing.

The seven models feature various hosel designs that determine each putter’s balance. Anser 5 is built for straight strokes; Anser, Anser 1, Anser 2 and Anser 3 are balanced for slight putting arcs; and Anser 4 and Anser 6 fit players with a strong putting arc.

Nike Method Core

The Nike Method Core is a putter that combines soft polymer and milled steel grooves to generate faster, more controlled forward roll at impact. What you won’t get is backspin that causes skidding and hopping – and the fewer putts that hop, the more putts that drop.

A unique polymer-aluminium insert lessens impact vibrations and provides a pure sound, resulting in a smooth, more controlled forward roll. And Polymetal Groove Technology generates a faster forward roll at impact for increased accuracy.

Putting - Did You Know?

When we watch golf on TV it can appear as if putts are being holed from long distance on a regular basis – for example, what percentage of putts, on average, do you think are holed from eight feet on the European Tour?

The answer is 52% – that means the very best golfers miss around half of putts from that range.

TV coverage tends to follow the players who are in contention to win and are probably putting particularly well. Plus, the director will often cut away to an unfancied player holing a monster putt purely for entertainment purposes. As a result, the club golfer will often have a very high and most likely unrealistic, expectation for their own putting.

What does this mean? Imagine that on the first 10 holes you have an eight-foot putt on each green. If you are expecting to hole 8/10 but only hole 5/10 you may begin to feel you are putting poorly and thus lose confidence for the remainder of the round.

If, on the other hand, you know that your putting performance is world class at 50 per cent that would provide a great mental platform to continue putting well.

How to hole more putts
To hole more putts the following drill is fantastic.

Equipment needed: Three tee pegs and a ball.

On the practice putting green choose a flat putt and place a tee peg at three, five, and seven foot intervals from the hole.

The challenge is to hole three putts from the first peg, then three from the second and finally three from the third.

Therefore, you have to hole nine consecutive putts. If you miss – even on putt number nine – start again at the first peg.

Use one ball and retrieve it each time – this makes the drill more realistic and creates a feeling of pressure, especially if you make it a ‘stay until I’m finished’ drill.

PING Lauches New G20 Range

The latest addition to PING’s famous G family is the G20. Designed for all ability levels, the external weighting of the large, forgiving G20 driver helps launch the ball high with low spin for maximum distance and accuracy by optimising the CG location.

PING’s proprietary high-balance-point TFC 169D shaft enables the golfer to swing a clubhead with more mass at the same speed, creating a higher MOI and generating faster ball speeds for longer, straighter drives.

A large, variable-thickness face generates faster ball speeds and increases MOI across the hitting surface for power and forgiveness. The 460cc clubhead is made from Ti 8-1-1, a lighter, lower-density alloy. Ti 8-1-1’s high strength-to-weight ratio allows for additional weight to be strategically placed, increasing the MOI on both the vertical and horizontal axes.

The fairway woods enable golfers to get the ball airborne and add yards easily thanks to external weighting and a low-deep CG that produces high launch and optimal spin for longer, straighter results.

The large, 17-4 stainless steel head and face increase the MOI to maintain consistent ball speeds across the hitting surface. Face height is optimised to offer a visually appealing, forgiving option from the tee or fairway. Golfers can optimise their ball flights by choosing either the higher launching TFC 169F shaft or the TFC 169F Tour version for a lower trajectory.

TaylorMade Brings R11 Technology to New Irons

Inspired by R11 driver innovation the new R11 iron is tuned to perfection. Precision CG placements, ultra-thin faces, a Tour sole design and Inverted Cone Technology make the R11 TaylorMade’s most powerful, playable and refined iron ever.

Features:
• Ultra-thin face thickness promotes faster ball speed and distance
• Inverted Cone Technology promotes faster ball speed and distance on off-centre hits
• Multi-functional sole increases playability from a variety of lies
• Progressive topline thickness promotes confidence at address throughout the set
• Advanced groove design promotes increased spin and control

Bradley Takes The Honours At First Time of Asking

Keegan has long been a famous name in UK sporting circles thanks to the great Kevin Keegan – but it was a Keegan of a different kind grabbing the headlines last month as young American ‘rookie’ Keegan Bradley won the USPGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club.

The 25-year-old hoisted the famous Wanamaker Trophy high above his head after winning a three-hole play off against fellow unfancied American Jason Dufner.

It was a tremendous achievement for the youngster who joined an exclusive club of just two other golfers who have won a Major at their first attempt – Francis Ouimet (1913 US Open) and Ben Curtis (2003 Open). Read More >
